Harry Wilson was born in England. During World War I, he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps as a surgical orderly and later in the Flying Corps as a radial engineering specialist. He moved to Canada after the war and then to Michigan (1923) where he worked as a tool designer. He received his pilot's license in 1932.
